Dated Feb. 1 – “A ‘Missionary Meeting’ and Concert will occur at the Academy on Friday evening of this week, and the programme will comprise various selections from Mr. Bristow’s Oratorio ‘Daniel,’ while the whole performance will be directed by that gentleman.  The entertainment will be of a somewhat ‘mixed’ character, for there are to be prayers, addresses, and several old congregational tunes.”

: “A Grand Concert by volunteers from the New York Harlem and Morrisania Philharmonic Societies, with Maria Brainard, Charlotte Hutchings, Geo. Simpson and J. R. Thomas as soloists, supported by a full and efficient orchestra, under the batonship of Prof. George Bristow, was given at the Academy of Music on the evening of the 5th inst., for a charitable object. Selections from Bistow’s ‘Daniel,’ etc. made up the programme. Simpson’s ‘O Israel, Return,’ was well done, and the Misses Brainard and Hutchings’ duet, ‘How Art Thou Fallen,’ was pleasing. A little less vocal effort, and more attention to sentimental sweetness, would be an improvement in Miss Hutchings’ cantation. Thomas was out of voice from cold, evidently, so criticism is out of place. In its entirety the concert was a success, and the orchestra music, particularly some oboe and horn solos, was very fine.”
