“[T]here will be matinées at almost all the City houses this day. ‘La Périchole’ will be sung at the Fifth-avenue Theatre.”
“No opera of Offenbach’s that has yet been produced here exhibits that popular composer to better advantage than ‘La Perichole,’ and Irma and Aujac seem exactly suited to the two leading parts. At the matinée on Saturday ‘Perichole’ met the usual success; and it will be played again to-night at the French Theatre, with the Morlacchi troupe in the ballet. When opera bouffe in New York becomes only a tradition of past fashion, ‘La Perichole’ will be remembered as one of the operas that justified the great popularity of the system.”
