“The second performance of ‘Maritana,’ at the French Theatre last night, was largely attended, and was, musically speaking, a very enjoyable performance. Madame Parepa-Rosa sung [sic] in her usual unexceptionable manner, and acted with average ability. Her speaking tones, it may be remarked, are very pleasant. She has, in dialogue, that soft voice which, according to indisputable authority, is such an excellent thing in woman [sic]; while in her singing she stands unequalled amid the vocalists in this country for power.
“Mrs. Seguin might offer as Lazarilla a more attractive ‘make-up;’ but, judging by the warmth of applause, it would be difficult for her to sing more to the satisfaction of the audience. She was last night obliged to repeat her song, ‘The Convent Bell.’ Mr. Castle finds in Don Caesar de Bazan one of his best parts, and his rendering of the spirited song, ‘Let Me like a Soldier Fall,’ is something of which he may well be proud. Mr. Campbell, who seems to be one of the most popular baritones, sings well as Don José, but does not invariably deserve the indiscriminate applause he receives.”
