“Miss Fanny Davenport showed a great deal of spirit and vivacity as the pert and pretty confidante, and at one point introduced (with English words) ‘La Colasa,’ a Spanish song with which many years ago Señora Pico used to turn the heads of the then young New York—which is now the lean and slippered Pantaloon. In vocalization, however, Miss Davenport is not a Pico yet.” “…but the patrons had just cause of complaint in the long waits between the acts, and of the noisy, blatant music of Mr. Stoepel’s orchestra. In this theatre, of all others, could light and delicate music, and the performances of solo instrumentalists be enjoyed, and nowhere could the ear-splitting, brassy ‘medleys’ and ‘quadrilles’ be better spared.”
