“There was a good audience at Steinway Hall last night to greet the Helvetia Maennerchor, whose concert was very enjoyable. The orchestra, which was full and well-balanced, added materially to the pleasure of the evening. Mme. JOHANNSEN sang with her accustomed spirit and skill, and the recall which followed her rendering of ROBERT SCHUMANN’S ‘Wanderlied’ was really well earned. Mr. F. R. BERGNER’S brief violoncello performance was artistic and effective. The laurels of the Society itself seemed to be carried off by the ‘Ave Maria,’ solo and quartette, by A. NEUENDORF, executed by Messrs. METHFESSEL, MARTIN, RAETZER and WAEBER, and was an unusually good performance. On being summoned back, the same gentlemen sang, with much taste and expression, the familiar ‘Wenn der Schnee von den Alpen Niederthaut.’ [sic] The Society retrieved in its ‘Volkslieder’ the reputation which an unfortunate slip in the ‘Sonnen Morgen’ chorus had imperiled; and its best friends could not fail to be unexpectedly well pleased by the general excellence of its performance.”
