“Miss Nilsson’s admirers seem to be almost equally divided in opinion as to her comparative merit in different rôles in which she appears. There are some who find in her Marguerita the very ideal of Goethe’s gentle heroine, and in Gounod’s music the perfection of sentiment. To others the tragic Lucia di Lammermoor is the best of her impersonations. Others find the picturesque Manon, with its variety of character and contrasts of emotion, the happiest of her efforts, while it is said Miss Nilsson herself has expressed the belief that her own powers are most truly unfolded and reach their highest expression in ‘La traviata.’

All things considered, we regard ‘Mignon’ as the most satisfactory [illegible] produced during the present season. Not that it is musically considered superior to the others, but because of its freshness and originality.”
