“Philharmonic rehearsal this p.m. In our box Mrs. Dinsmore, Mrs. Henry Howland (an expert in music), handsome Miss Margaret Taylor, Jem [Ruggles], Murray Hoffman, Jr., Chase Carroll, etc. Bergner’s ‘cello concerto (Goltermann) was nice—much applauded. The Bargiel overture (Prometheus) is filthy. Its only good points are certain manifest larcenies from Beethoven’s 9th symphony. Two choruses by Liederkranz were only pretty good. Liederkranz is inferior to Mosenthal’s (& Jem’s) Mendelssohn Glee Club in attack & precision. Eroica & 'Fingal’s Cave' intense & delightful.”
