“A very large audience, gathered in the Academy of Music, last evening, enjoyed the performance supplied on the occasion of the seventh annual Springtide Festival of the Orpheon Choral Society. The performance included solo singing by Miss Cassie Renz and Mr. G. C. Rockwood, piano playing by Mr. R. L. Herman, choral work by the members of the Society, and an address on ‘Music,’ written and delivered by Rev. H. W. Bellows, D. D. It was very creditable, and the labors of the chorus had results proving most clearly that the efforts of Mr. Jerome Hopkins, the founder and conductor of the Society, have been well directed, earnest and profitable.”

“One of the most remarkable music sessions ever known in this city was brought to a close on Monday evening by the Seventh Springtime Festival of the Orpheon Choral Society, a chartered institution for the maintenance of free training schools for choir and chorus singers, founded eleven years ago by Mr. Jerome Hopkins, the pianist. The anniversary on Monday night was notable for the great variety and excellence of the performances, comprising English glees and madrigals, and German part songs, as well as solos, both vocal and instrumental. A great novelty, and one warmly applauded, was the ‘Solo Sextet Choir’ of Mr. Hopkins. Mr. R. Herman, the Berlinese pianist, was recalled after his solo, and Miss Cassie Renz fairly ‘carried the house’ by her songs, in both of which her truly phenomenal voice was well exhibited. Rev. Dr. Bellows delivered the address on ‘Music,’ and it was a masterly effort.”

“The Orpheon Choral Society’s Free Choir Schools gave their seventh Springtide Festival, on Monday night, at the Academy of Music, before a large audience. The Rev. Dr. Bellows delivered an address on the subject of ‘Music.’ The chorus and orchestra numbered several hundred and were directed by Mr. Jerome Hopkins, the founder of these free schools. Among the artists were [see above]. The festival was by far the finest yet given by this Society.”
