“No little discrimination is required on the part of a manager to make a variety theatre attractive and at the same time select in its general character, and, although the many misdirected attempts to do so here have not been attended with good results, Mr. Josh Hart has certainly succeeded in raising the Comique to a standard it never before attained. The programme last night, for instance, was not only unobjectionable but intensely amusing, and the audience—a crowded and respectable one—seemed to be delighted with the entire entertainment, which included a local drama, songs and dances, humorous sketches, acrobatic feats, and last, not least, a relishable adaptation of a great Irish drama entitled ‘Arrah-na-Brogue.’ From beginning to end the assemblage was kept in the best possible spirits.”
