“Although the subscription season of Italian opera for thirty nights ended last night and the manager ventured upon giving three extra nights and a matinée this week without subscriptions, and depending entirely upon the public, there was a large and fashionable audience last night to hear ‘Mignon’ for the last time. This was the more remarkable because the season had been unusually long, and because our New York audiences are fond of novelty and are apt to get tired even of a good thing when prolonged. The truth is that Lucca grows in public favor, and that whenever she performs people will go to see and hear her. ‘Mignon’ has been repeated several times, still it attracts. It is unnecessary to discuss the merits of the opera or of the performance, as they have been pretty fully reviewed heretofore. Without mentioning the performers individually it may be said that they improve by the repetition of their parts in this opera, and no doubt the same experience in others would produce the same results.”
