“A benefit concert took place in Steinway’s smaller hall, on Wednesday afternoon, which reflected great credit on those whose benevolence prompted them to perform, and yielded unexpected pleasure to those whom the same motive prompted to attend. Two young girls, who played respectively the harp and violin, having suffered the worst of artistic misfortunes in the loss of their instruments, Mme. Anna Bishop, Mrs. Brookhouse Bowler, Miss Tucker, Mr. Humphries, Mr. Macdonald and Mr. L. G. Gottschalk kindly volunteered their services to help them, the Messrs. Steinway gave the use of their hall, the Messrs. Brown & Buckwell that of a harp, and a very enjoyable little concert was the result. Mme. Anna Bishop sang the ‘Dove Sono’ from Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro,’ one of those test pieces in which, in past times, so many reputations have been made. To hear Mme. Bishop sing this studied and refined music is equivalent to a lesson in the art of singing. After this the two little creatures played. It is always very touching to hear children innocently executing conventional cadenzas. It is like baby lips lisping poetry. They look so unutterably solemn, too, while they are doing it; and if one watches, one may catch a shake of the curly head if a note is just a leetle bit out. Little Alice and Ada do their work fairly and well, and may make artists in time. We can only regret that their deserts, and those of the ladies and gentlemen who came to their assistance, did not attract a larger assemblage.”
