“The repetition of Gounod’s popular work attracted another numerous assemblage to the Academy last evening. Few, if any, of the modern operas have taken such a complete hold of the public—a fact that has had ample demonstration during the past and present seasons. Mr. Maretzek’s artists have appeared certainly to much better advantage in ‘Faust’ than in many other of the productions to which their somewhat limited répertoire is seemingly confined. Mme. Lucca was again the recipient of enthusiastic tokens of approval, to say nothing of a handsome floral tribute; and in the prison scene renewed her great lyric triumph of which so much has already been spoken. The performance was altogether marked by great smoothness.”
