“The second performance of Mdme. Lichtmay’s troupe of German singers was attended by a moderately large audience, and the rendering of Flotow’s ‘Martha’ merited their approval.”

“A German opera company, under the management of Madame Lichtmay, performed for the second time last evening at the large Terrace Garden Hall, which has been lately built to do duty for a theatre. It is tastefully decorated and looks very neat and cheerful, but quite upsets one’s preconceived notion of precincts hallowed to opera. ‘Martha’ was given last evening to a numerous audience which half filled the house. Madame Lichtman’s company dealt gently with the opera, but as yet only thus much can be said of it—that it is richer in promise than in actual performance. We have seen ‘Martha’ far worse performed than it was last evening, but also a trifle better. The orchestra is not numerous, but did very well [illegible…] the chorus was [illegible] tolerably harmonious, showing a commendable espirit de corps. The part of Lady Henrietta was rendered by Miss Pauline Bredelli, whose voice is sympathetic, but not powerful; her acting was comparatively tame. Miss Clara Perl as Nancy did far better than all the rest. She has a good voice and sang with spirit and correctness. She was repeatedly encored as well as applauded. Mr. Carl Beetz, the tenor, sang Lionel. He has a pleasant voice, but one of very limited scope. He should therefore avoid forcing it to a high pitch, for ‘vaulting ambition that o’erleaps itself falls on the other side.’ Mr. Carl Formes performed Plunkett, a part which has been expressly written for him. Mr. Formes is a tradition of the past. Time has ridden roughshod over his voice, which is now only a reminder of what it used to be in days gone by. His acting is, however, still excellent, and remains a living reminiscence of his departed power. The remaining performers call for no special mention.”

“The second performance of German opera at the Terrace Garden Theatre, was numerously attended on Wednesday evening, and there is a prospect that the enterprise which suggested the opening of a place of amusement in the relatively remote locality where Mr.Koch’s establishment is situated, and the care which is bestowed upon the representations, will receive an adequate reward in the shape of the permanent popularity of the house and artists. Wednesday ‘Martha’ was creditably sung, Fraulein Bredelli personating Lady Harriet, Frau Perl picturing Nancy, Herr Beetz embodying Lyonel, and Herr Formes Plunkett. The quartet was a very good one, and the capital acting of Frau Perl and Herr Formes proved particularly effective.”
