Review: New York Herald, 15 September 1873, 4.

“The mass sung by the choir was Haydn’s Second Mass, which, with the brilliant organ playing of Dr. William Berge, and the clockwork precision with which the well-trained choir sung the trying music, was a delightful treat. The ‘Qui tollis,’ a baritone solo, in the absence of Signor Bacelli, was admirably rendered by the tenor, Signor Tamaro. At the vespers in the afternoon Miss Mary Wernecke sung [sic] a very beautiful contralto solo, ‘Salve Regina,’ of the Italian school, and showed a remarkable progress in both volume of voice and intensity of expression. Tamaro made his own ‘Ave Verum’ a gem of the occasion.”
