The annual concert of Mr. Frederic Bergner took place at Steinway Hall on Saturday evening. The audience crowded the smaller hall, and even extended into the large one, and the entertainment was in every way successful. The beautiful first movement of Mozart’s string quartette in G major was excellently played by Dr. Damrosch, Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Matzka, and Mr. Bergner, for the opening piece, and the concert closed with Schubert’s grand string quintette in C major (Opus 163), of which the adagio was specially well done. Mr. Bergner played a charming reverie of his own, accompanied on the piano by Mr. von Inten; Miss Sterling sang a canzonetta of Mozart’s; Schubert’s ‘Der Stürmische Morgen,’ and a pretty cradle song of Wagner’s, ‘Schlaf ein, holdes Kind.’ Miss Mehlig played Schumann’s ‘Des Abends’ and Liszt’s first ‘Hungarian Rhapsody.’”
“New York, May 10—On Saturday, May 3rd, Mr. F. Bergner gave his annual concert, presenting a very interesting programme to a large and appreciative audience. The talented violoncellist was assisted by Miss Anna Mehlig, Miss Sterling, Mr. Matzka and Dr. Damrosch. The opening piece was Mozart’s string Quartet, in G major, (first movement), played by Mr. Bergner, Dr. Damrosch, Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Matzka. The Adagio from Schubert’s Quintet in C major, op. 163, was also played.
Mr. Bergner’s selection was a beautiful reverie for the Violoncello, written by himself, Mr. Van Inten playing the pianoforte accompaniment. Miss Mehlig gave a fine rendering of Schumann’s ‘Abends’ and Liszt’s first ‘Hungarian Rhapsody.’ Miss Sterling sang a Cradle Song by Wagner: ‘Schlaf ein, holdes Kind;’ a Canzonet by Mozart, and Schubert’s ‘Der Stürmische Morgen.’ The concert was thoroughly artistic and enjoyable.”
