“The spacious armory of the Twenty-second Regiment in Fourteenth street was crowded last night, in spite of the sweltering weather, on the occasion of a benefit concert given by Gilmore’s military band. This organization has already shown itself far in advance of all other military bands in this country, and the programme last evening and the rendering of it were worthy of the high reputation acquired in one season by the followers of Gilmore. The ‘Freischütz’ overture, with its ever-fresh themes and harmonies; the bouquet of gems from Auber’s operas, and the blatant introduction to ‘Il Poliuto’ were given with a spirit, élan and whole-soul expression that testified to the high training of the band. Arbuckle and other artists of the band played a number of solos. Gilmore shows a determination to make his military band such as Thomas has made his orchestra.”
