“Over 7,000 people attended the Sunday concert at this garden last night. The attractive programme, combining the best elements of truly sacred works, such as the ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ from the ‘Messiah,’ the overture to ‘The Martyrs,’ and works of a similar description, with many judicious selections from the compositions of Mendelssohn, Letsch, Kreutzer, Balfe and Lefebre, formed a delightful night’s entertainment. Mr. Levy, the celebrated cornet player, was announced to appear, but swollen lips interfered. The band is now without exception the best that military music can find as interpreters in this country. Mr. Gilmore has labored long and with effect to give New York such military music as Europe alone has been able to boast of heretofore. Then the lovely garden, the first at present in the world, which alone is a great attraction, gradually increases in interest with the public, and is now recognized as the favorite summer garden of the metropolis. Mr. Sohst, one of our best baritones, sang last night an exquisite song, by P. S. Gilmore, entitled ‘Death’s at the Door.’ Mr. Gilmore is not only a clever conductor, but he is also an excellent composer. The success of Gilmore’s Garden is now an assured fact.”
