“…After which a liberal series of selections from Flotow’s new opera, ‘L’Ombra,’ comprising sixteen of the principal numbers of the work, enough to give its story and enable the audience to judge its merits. It was certainly introduced to the public in New-York under the happiest auspices—a large and sympathetic audience, and the following distinguished artists [see above]. With these well-known voices the sweet and limpid music of the German maestro could not fail to please, and several of the [illegible] and scenas were enthusiastically received. All four of the artists we have named were in excellent voice and sang with the greatest spirit and effect. Miss Phillipps, to whom the president had alluded as the ‘historic contralto of the American stage,’ sang with unusual power and sweetness, and Miss Colville was [illegible] graceful and winning in the part of Vespina. Mr. Karl and M. Orlandini were worthy of the occasion, and fairly divided the laurels with the heroines of the play.”
“The Academy was in gala attire last night, and so were the headquarters of the Lotus Club. A concert and a number of operatic selections from Flotow’s latest work formed the musical programme. The artists were [see above]. The house looked very pretty in its gala dress, and the club house presented the attraction of a display of picture by eminent artists. The singers acquitted themselves very satisfactorily, and the entire evening proved to be one of enjoyment and pleasure.”
