Brief: “The Opera. The matinee of last Saturday was well attended, and was a happy artistic success, Brambilla taking the leading part to the full satisfaction of the audience.”

“AMUSEMENTS. The second week of Mr. Maretzek’s season ended brilliantly on Saturday with a matinee, when ‘La Traviata’ was given for the second, and we hope, last time—for the present, at least. The performance was a good one, and Signora Brambilla sang decidedly better than she did on the night of her début. But were [sic] these circumstances cannot reconcile us to a work that has been so often played. For the moment we have had enough of the ‘Lost One.’ She has been found too often; let her now be abandoned.

It is impossible to witness sixteen performances at the Academy without noticing the steady improvement that is constantly taking place in them. The artists are beginning to feel easy, the instrumentalists are getting used to each other, and the members of the chorus display a creditable precision in the matter of beginning and ending.”
