“The Doctor of Alcantara will be presented at the new French theatre this evening, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Tuesday.  If Mr. Eichberg would give a little more orchestral coloring, and thus bring out more prominently the lights and shades of expression in the charming instrumentation of his operetta, he would remove the only blemishes that exist in his rendering.  These little rough points can be easily smoothed down with the materials he has, and then the operetta will be unexceptionable in every respect.”

“Eichberg’s Opera, ‘The Doctor of Alcantara,’ continues to attract crowded and fashionable audiences, and to give that unmistakable satisfaction which is expressed in hearty laughter and cordial applause. The music is of that light and pleasant character which captivates the ear. Its own merits justify its success, and the excellent style of its performance, vocally and dramatically, affords another reason for its popularity.”
