Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 23 July 1866, 5.

“To our mind ‘Columbus’ is a better burlesque than even ‘Pocahontas,’ because the plot is more coherent and compact, the incidents have a more natural sequence, and the fun overlies both thought and poetic sentiment. It is pleasant to note, also, that Mr. Brougham’s audiences appear to appreciate the inner meaning of his work, as well as spirit of mirth and its flashes of brilliancy.”

“The bill offered a two-act drama, ‘Time Tries All,’ and the popular burlesque of ‘Columbus Reconstructed.’ The system of opening with a jolly farce would be endurable, but the deliberate infliction of a two-act drama, comedy, or whatever is absolutely a nuisance in such weather as this. . . . Before the hour of 9:30 arrived every one in the theatre was weary.  No one cares to be kept in a theatre after 10 o’clock, and the performance of the burlesque could easily close at that hour.”

A “ludicrous extravaganza.”

Notes that this is the fiftieth consecutive perf, and that the run “is a deserved success.”
