“Lortzing’s ‘Poacher’ was charmingly given with frequent encores.  Herr Graff, as the Liebe Schulemeister, gives as good a specimen of the buffo style as we have had here for many years.  In the billiard scene, where he roars out a psalm tune while the tenor and basso are playing at billiards, and in the closing scene, where he leads his scholars in singing a ludicrous prayer, he is especially amusing.  The introduction of a billiard table on an operatic stage is a novelty worth seeing, while the singing of Johannsen, Quint and Schaumburg is well worth hearing.”
