“The return of Mr. Anschutz, with his industrious and versatile company, leaves the City a pleasant place of musical resort, where completeness can be enjoyed without any of the apprehension on the score of the indisposition of a single artist. . . . [T]o-night will play Beethoven’s grand opera of ‘Fidelio,’ a work which, under his able direction, has become one of the most popular of the repertoire.”

Review: Courrier des États-Unis, 11 February 1863, 2.
"M. Anschutz returned with his German company to New York after a brilliant campaign in Philadelphia. They rediscovered in the Empire City the successes that welcomed them in the city of brotherly love. Monday, Fidelio, which was probably performed for the last time, obtained a clear success. Mmes Rotter and Johannsen, and M. Lotti, were received with applause. The Arion Chorus proved, as usual, that they are the premiere choral society in New-York, and the orchestra, directed by M. Anschutz, was marvelous. The execution of Fidelio is so difficult that one can’t really appreciate the manner in which the work of Beethoven was rendered by the German artists."

“The German Opera returned from Philadelphia, and gave several performances of operas of their old repertoire. The pecuniary success so far was not very encouraging.”
