The current success of Faust helps Maretzek fight with an advantage the Metropolitan Fair; Gounod’s opera will sell out tickets tonight, too.

Review: New York Clipper, 16 April 1864, 4.
“The opera dropped off somewhat after the Fair got fairly under way, but ‘Faust’ drew a good house on the 8th.  This opera fetches ‘em when everything else fails.  One of the secrets of its success is, that it is ‘the thing’ to be at the opera on ‘Faust’ nights, and splurge in the best the dry goods market affords.”
