“The Opera. ‘Faust,’ as usual, attracted a large audience to the Academy of Music last night, though the applause was hardly as prominent as on previous occasions. The soldiers’ chorus was not encored and we presume that henceforth the usual encore in this piece will not be insisted upon. When ‘Trovatore’ was first produced the anvil chorus struck the popular ear so completely, that for the first year of the performance of the opera it was encored; but now it passes almost unnoticed. As the opera-goers become more familiar with ‘Faust,’ this soldiers’ chorus will share the same fate, and the favor of the audience will be bestowed upon some quieter portions of the opera not yet fully appreciated.”
