“A good audience attended the matinée given by Mr. Mills, on Saturday, at Steinway Hall. There was some disappointment at the absence of Miss Antoinette Sterling, which became sincere regret when it was learned that this meritorious artist is seriously ill. The rest of the great combination were present, however, and the concert was unusually enjoyable. We subjoin the programme, which will show the exceptional character of the matinée [see above]."

“The success of Saturday’s matinée concert at Steinway Hall ought to lead to a series of kindred entertainments. A number of popular artists took part in the affair, and, as the public felt secure that a great deal of good and enjoyable music was within their reach, the attendance was very large. Mr. S. B. Mills and Mr. W. F. Mills were at the piano; Mr. G. W. Morgan was at the organ; Mr. Rudolph Dargel played on the cornet; Mme. Anna Bishop, Miss Jenny Busk, Mrs. Bowler, and Messrs. Hill, Gottschalk and De Korbay sang, and Miss Bertha Brousil executed a brief violin solo. Similar gatherings would not at first furnish very profitable material for criticism, but their steady influence on the public might lead to more ambitious efforts on the part of managers. Saturday’s incidents, it must be mentioned, were productive of repeated demonstrations of pleasure from the audience; almost all the pieces were redemanded.”
